Smith Island is a small, remote island in the Chesapeake Bay, about 12 miles off the coast of Crisfield, Maryland. It’s only accessible by boat and is made up of three quaint villages: Ewell, Tylerton, and Rhodes Point. Around 200 people live there, many of whom still work the water, continuing the island’s long tradition of crabbing and fishing. The island is known for its strong sense of community, unique way of speaking, and, of course, the famous Smith Island Cake—Maryland’s official state dessert. With its rich heritage and quiet beauty, it offers a rare look at life rooted deeply in the Chesapeake’s history.
