There’s a new rhythm that has settled into Monday afternoons at Sugar Water: the soft click of tiles, a little laughter over tea, some friendly competition, and plenty of conversation around the table.

Mahjong Madness is officially part of the Sugar Water Monday lineup, bringing together curious beginners, experienced players, and everyone in between for an afternoon of learning, playing, and simply enjoying one another’s company.

Every Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, our lounge becomes a place to gather, learn something new, meet fellow players, and maybe discover that you have a bit of a competitive streak hiding somewhere.

And yes, there’s always a seat waiting for you.

Mahjong is more than just a game. It’s tradition, strategy, conversation, and connection all wrapped up in one beautifully tiled package.

With roots in Chinese culture and a long history of bringing people together, Mahjong has a way of turning an ordinary afternoon into something a little more memorable. There’s plenty of strategy involved, but there’s also plenty of laughter, conversation, and those wonderfully satisfying moments when everything finally starts to click.

That’s exactly the spirit we’ve embraced with Mahjong Madness.

Whether you’ve never touched a Mahjong tile before or you already know your way around the game, there’s room at the table.

Come Learn, Come Play

We offer two ways to join in:

BeginnerBrand new to Mahjong? No problem. Our beginner group is designed to help you learn the fundamentals in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

PlayerAlready know how to play? Jump right in and enjoy an afternoon of games, conversation, and friendly competition.

Beginner instruction is led by Karen Lischick and Smaro George, who make learning the game approachable, relaxed, and, most importantly, fun. Their goal is to take the intimidation out of learning something new and help every player feel comfortable at the table.

Because you don’t have to be an expert to join the fun.

Make an Afternoon of It

Mahjong Madness is free to participate in, but of course, you’re always welcome to order from our menu when you arrive, too.

It’s an afternoon designed to be enjoyed at your own pace. Come for the game, stay for the conversation, grab a drink, order a little something to eat, and settle in for a few hours away from the usual Monday routine.

What we love most about Mahjong Madness isn’t just what happens on the table.

It’s the people.

It’s meeting someone new. Learning from someone who has played for years. Laughing over a particularly questionable move. Getting a little competitive. Sharing a cup of tea. And finding yourself looking forward to Monday because you know there will be familiar faces waiting for you.

Mahjong Madness meets every Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Seating is intentionally limited to keep the games comfortable and engaging, so reserving your spot ahead of time is encouraged by calling 410-430-5251.
