There’s a new rhythm about to settle into the afternoons at Sugar Water… the soft click of tiles, a little laughter over tea, and just enough friendly competition to keep things interesting. Starting this spring, we’re inviting guests to gather, learn, and play with the launch of Mahjong Madness, a weekly Mahjong group at Sugar Water in The Washington Hotel.
Beginning Monday, May 4th, Mahjong Madness will meet every Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, offering a welcoming space for both curious beginners and seasoned players alike. Whether you’ve never touched a tile or you already know your way around the game, there’s a seat at the table waiting for you.
Mahjong is more than just a game. It’s a tradition, a mental workout, and a social experience all wrapped into one. With its roots in Chinese culture and a long-standing place in social circles around the world, Mahjong has a way of bringing people together. It invites conversation, encourages strategy, and creates those small, memorable moments that turn into lasting connections.
At Sugar Water, we’re embracing that spirit fully.
To make the experience enjoyable for everyone, Mahjong Madness will offer two types of registration. Guests can sign up as a Beginner, where they’ll be guided through the fundamentals of the game, or as a Player, for those who already know how to play and are ready to jump right in. This structure allows everyone to feel comfortable, confident, and part of the experience, no matter their skill level.
Beginner instruction will be led by Karen Lischick and Smaro George, who will guide new players through the rules, flow, and strategies of Mahjong in a relaxed and approachable way. Their goal is simple: to make the game feel less intimidating and a lot more fun. Learning something new should feel like an invitation, not a challenge, and Mahjong Madness is designed with exactly that in mind.
While there is no charge to participate in the group, guests are encouraged to pre order their drinks & snacks when registering but are more than welcome to order from the menu when you come in. Whether it’s a light lunch, a warm cup of tea, or something a little more indulgent, the experience is meant to feel leisurely and enjoyable. It’s the kind of afternoon where time slows down just enough to savor it.
Seating for Mahjong Madness will be intentionally limited to keep the atmosphere comfortable and engaging, so early registration is highly encouraged. Guests will be able to reserve their spot through our Wix event page, ensuring a smooth and organized experience each week.
At its heart, Mahjong Madness is about more than tiles and tables. It’s about creating a space where people can gather, learn something new, share a few laughs, and maybe even spark a little friendly rivalry. It’s about community, connection, and giving Mondays something to look forward to.
