Sugar Water Hosts Community Dinner
A Community Dinner is just that, a dinner with community. May be with friends and family but should include community you may know, know of or do not know. It is about growing community.
Dana and David Zucker, owners of Sugar Water, began hosting Community Dinners at their home inspired by the documentary on Netflix, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. The small group quickly grew and strangers became freinds and new relationships were built. Dana and David knew when they opened the restaurant this would become a monthly event inviting community in to share their heritage, love of food, talents and more.
Mark your calendars for an evening of flavors, tradition and community spirit at Sugar Water, located in the Washington Hotel. On Sunday, January 26th, at 4:30 PM, the restaurant will open its doors for a special Community Dinner—an opportunity to gather, share stories, and enjoy a thoughtfully crafted menu. This event is more than just a meal—it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the timeless art of Greek cooking. Join us for an unforgettable evening of food and connection at our Community Dinner!

The evening will feature old family recipes from Smaro George, offering an authentic taste of Greece through dishes passed down for generations. From savory to sweet, every bite tells a story of love, history, and tradition.

A message from Smaro George:
My family hails from the Ionian islands in the Peloponnese, and the Island of Corfu in Greece. I’m proud to be a third-generation Greek-American. It's interesting but all of my family hails from Greece. I was born in Dayton, Ohio, at the end of World War II, where there was a large and vibrant Greek community.
While my father was in the service,I lived with my mother and grandparents, and I learned to speak Greek before English. Cooking has always been a part of my life, thanks to my grandparents and parents, who were exceptional cooks. My father owned a restaurant and was among the first fast food owners in the country. Family gatherings often featured lamb roasts on the spit, and those meals taught me that food is about more than nourishment—it’s about bringing people together to create lasting memories.
My favorite thing about living in Somerset County is the people. There’s an incredible mix of locals and newcomers, all sharing a love for this special hidden gem. There are so many energetic people with diverse ideas and generous hearts.I’m thrilled to be the first guest chef at Sugar Water. I know this will be the start of many wonderful Community Suppers, celebrating this unique and welcoming area.
