There are buildings you walk past without thinking much about them. And then there are buildings that seem to have a story of their own. The Historic Washington Hotel in downtown Princess Anne, MD is one of those places.
For generations, this building has been part of the landscape of Somerset County, MD. It has watched the town change around it, welcomed travelers through its doors, and provided a place for people to gather, eat, celebrate, rest, and simply spend a little time away from home.
Today, you might know it as the home of Sugar Water Restaurant, or perhaps you’ve stayed in one of the hotel rooms upstairs. Maybe you’ve stopped in for dinner, met a friend at the bar, attended an event, or wandered through the building without giving much thought to everything that came before.
But that’s the interesting part.
There was a whole lot of life here before us.

It’s a restaurant built around good food, community, and the Eastern Shore, MD. It’s a place for dinner with friends, drinks at the bar, celebrations around a table, and those unexpected conversations that somehow become the best part of the evening.
Continuing History
Upstairs, the hotel continues that tradition of welcoming people in. A guest arrives. A key turns. A suitcase lands on the floor. Someone looks out the window at Princess Anne.
And for a little while, they’re part of the story too. That’s what we love about this place.
It’s not frozen in history.
It’s still living.
