A brief history of Smith Island
Smith Island has a history that dates back to the 17th century when settlers from Cornwall, England, established a small fishing and farming community. The island’s isolation has helped preserve its distinct dialect and ways. This unique linguistic heritage, combined with its tight-knit community, makes Smith Island a cultural treasure. There are cozy bed-and-breakfasts and vacation rentals available, offering a chance to enjoy the island's peaceful environment after the day-trippers have departed. While the bed & breakfasts on the island are amazing, there is also a hidden gem in downtown Princess Anne, MD, the Washington Hotel. Although it is not on the island it is still in small Somerset County and is just a short distance to the ferry!

Conservation efforts are underway to protect this cherished piece of the Chesapeake Bay. Here at Sugar Water Farm we are currently working on a wetland restoration project. Our Farm sits on the Manokin River which feeds directly into the Chesapeake Bay. Also at our restaurant, Sugar Water, we recycle our oyster shells to put back into the bay for oyster reef restoration.Â
